As a child I remember seeing thousands of fireflies floating in the night along a river, the fascination, and the fear of the darkness beyond. The act of taking photographs resembles the desire to catch the light of the fireflies in my hand.
“En” is a series of photographs that capture traces of encounters within the cycle of life.
In Japanese, the sound “en” suggests a sense of chance and circularity.
People often believe that “en” is what brings encounters into our life. It is something like an invisible stream that connects people to each other and to the world. This idea has always inspired me and influeced my approach to photography.
The encounters that I have sought to portray produce a particular resonance; what I see outside is looking back at me inside, awakening subconscious memories and sensations from the past. To recreate this flow and to capture the sway of emotions, I have used a variety of exposures while holding the camera with my hands.
When the photographs are gathered, the fragments of scenes start to interact with each other and create a visual dialogue in which the viewers are invited to wander about their own stories.
